You should never include trim when you measure the width of the windows. While you are taking measurements, you will come across the need to expose the jamb or the vertical side of the window frame. You can do that by raising the window sash. You can then place your measuring tape horizontally and take the measurements from left to right.

You can close the window and take a similar measurement from the middle part of your window as well. Then it would help if you took measurements for the distance that exists in between the jambs. You can proceed to measure the gap that exists between jambs near the top of your window. This will be the width of your window.

  • Measuring the height of the window

You will need to take measurements of your window height from outdoors. You should grab your measuring tape and then take measurements from the top to the bottom of the opening. This will be the area where the sash is resting once it is closed. While taking this measurement, you need to make sure that you are not taking any measures of the horizontal trim board, which is extending from the wall.

You need to take three different vertical measurements. One should be from the left side of your window. Then you will be able to proceed to the header. Then you can take measures of the right side of the window.

You should then go ahead and record the smallest number. This will be the measurement of the height of your window.

You should initially measure the distance that exists in between screen channels within the window frame. After you take measurements, you should reduce 1/8 inches from the reading you got for width. Then you can proceed to take measurements of the height. You should raise the sash and measure the distance up to the lip or the ridge that is holding your screen in place. You should add 1/8 inches to that reading and end up with the height measurement.
